Prescription

Most dentists are now required by law to prescribe electronically and will use our integrated e-prescribing Smart Tool (DoseSpot).
  1. The first part of this page covers e-prescribing through DoseSpot.
  2. The latter sections ("Native Prescription Setup" and "Enter and Print Paper Prescriptions") relate to legacy prescribing features. Depending on your state laws, you may be sanctioned by your dental board for supplying patients with paper prescriptions.
To sign up for our e-prescribing service, visit our Pricing page or contact us for assistance.

If you're using our e-prescribing Smart Tool, first ensure you're logged into Practice-Web as a prescribing provider. Then, go to the Family Module with the patient selected and check that the patient’s information grid is complete and properly typed in (i.e. no extra spaces).  Pay close attention to:
  1. First and Last Name

  3. Physical Address

Then, go to the Chart Module and launch electronic prescribing by clicking the eRx button in the toolbar at the top of the screen.

The main DoseSpot window should launch.

Transmit an ePrescription for a Controlled Substance

Sending Electronically Prescribed Controlled Substances is different from sending non-controlled eRx in two ways:
  1. Prescribers must review the patient’s history of prescribed controlled substances through the practicing state’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP).
  2. Prescribers enter two methods of identity proofing, also known as Two-Factor Authentication (TFA).
After clicking on Approve and Send, the Controlled Substance – Ready to Sign window will generate with a summary of the Prescriber and Patient’s info and a summary of the prescription.

A link to the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program website for the Prescriber’s state also displays.    Prescribers must log in and review the Patient’s history of controlled substance(s) prescribed.  Once reviewed, enable the Ready to Sign checkbox.  Then, click on Sign & Send.

The Two-Factor-Authentication, or two ways to prove that the Prescriber is the user sending the prescription, prompt will generate.
  1. 1st Factor: Prescriber-created PIN (4 digits)
  2. 2nd Factor:  TFA security code (6 digits) from the DUO Mobile App on Prescriber’s mobile device.

After clicking on the Sign & Send button,  the Prescriber will be prompted to enter the following:
  1. Prescriber-created PIN (4 digits)
  2. Two-Factor Authentication security code (6 digits) from the DUO Mobile App on Prescriber’s mobile device.
The Prescriber will click on the Sign & Send button again (final time) to transmit the controlled substance to the pharmacy noted.

The transmitted prescription will display under the Active Medications portion.  Hover over the Status icon to see any updates on the transmission.
